Putting MCR Back On the Radio

I’ve wanted to be a radio show host for about, oh, 7 years? And I finally get the chance to! My high school has a spot open for a Saturday night radio show and I snatched that opportunity so fast (thanks Mr. G).

But, as most people who know me know, my music taste revolves around a really specific era. I’m talking from 1990 to 2010. While I was talking with Mr. G, the radio and TV teacher, he was asking what genres I listen to and what I responded was ‘I’m more into specific years’. And thus, my radio show was born. We’ve gone through a few different names including but not limited to the Saturday Night Drive With Clevenger, The Scream, Eyeliner Hour, and From the Gym Corner. All of these are pretty good but I’m a slut for references and stealing others' ideas (with credit!) so I might call it the Cemetery Drive.

The whole ‘drive’ idea came from good ol’ Mr. G and we both really liked it but he said that he ‘wanted it to be from my brain’. And plus, I wanted something that fit the overall theme of the music that I was going to play. I have to create a list of 14-ish songs for my hour on the air (or two depending on how this plays out) and I do have a list that I’d like to share but before that, lemme explain the school’s station real quick.

The station, 91.5 The Eagle, is an adult alternative station with quite a mix of genres. They don’t really play popular music which is why Mr. G was really interested in getting me my own show. I think the most popular song I’ve heard the station play was Tear In My Heart by top. And that’s fairly popular, now that I think about it. Anyway.

So the theme of my show is early 00s rock. I’m using ‘rock’ as an umbrella term because that’s what a lot of the music boils down to when we talk about early 00s pop-punk, emo, screamo - whatever you personally call it. I’ve always just called it rock. Alright. Now here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: a very incomplete list of songs that I would love to feature on my hour on the air.

1. Skylines and Turnstiles - My Chemical Romance

2. One-Eighty By Summer - Taking Back Sunday

3. The Bird and the Worm - The Used

4. Understanding in a Car Crash - Thursday

5. Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part to Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows) - Fall Out Boy

6. Build God, Then We’ll Talk - Panic! At the Disco

7. For a Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic - Paramore

8. 10 Rings - Pencey Prep

9. Perfect - Simple Plan

10. East Jesus Nowhere - Green Day

11. Breaking the Habit - Linkin Park

12. He Wasn’t - Avril Lavigne

13. Going Under - Evanescence

14. Cars & Calories - Saves the Day

And that’s the list! I’m open to edits as well. These were just the songs that I grew up on in the early 00s and I have a terrible memory, too, so hit me up! I refrained from adding the artists' most popular songs but in a few cases, you can tell that I did. Especially with some bands that I, well, only knew their most popular song. And in some cases, I just go hard for that song specifically.

This list is very basic and will go through many revisions as the days go on because first, I need to run these by Mr. G to see if they’re suitable for the radio. Second, we need to buy the songs that I don’t already have on CD. And third, we need to put them in an order that makes sense. Some of these songs might even be cut entirely because being a radio host usually means talking in between certain songs. I want to have a strong start and an ending that makes people want to hear more. I won’t be on the air for a bit but I’m just so excited!! I just had to share this with the lovely people of Twitter.

I’m looking forward to being on the airwaves and if you want, you can listen in here.
